The Last Dance is ruling our lives right now, and rightfully so. However, at some point, the Chicago Bulls truly need to move on and build a winning franchise again.

This is the best daily Chicago Bulls podcast on the air. The voice of true Chicago Bulls fans lies here. Hosts Jordan Maly and Matt Peck provide you with a daily dose of Chicago Bulls news, recaps, fan reaction, and some of the best guests - five days.

They did that for a moment when Derrick Rose was healthy and in his prime, but it’s going on four years since the Bulls have won a playoff series.

They haven’t been back to the NBA Finals since Michael Jordan retired.

Needless to say, it shocked nobody when the Bulls made a major change in their front office. More heads could roll in the not too distant future, too, as the Bulls are just 22-38 this year and going nowhere fast.

Head coach Jim Boylen could be on the way out, while the Bulls could be active players on the open market. With that, here’s a look at the top trade targets for the Chicago Bulls in 2020.

Otto Porter is unlikely to opt out of a contract that pays him $26 million this year, but whether he does or not, Chicago may be interested in a replacement.

Barton is a much better offensive player and has two extra years on his contract, potentially making him a more appealing long-term fit.

Denver loves Barton, but they don’t exactly need him with Michael Porter Jr. waiting to step up. Thaddeus Young alone makes the numbers work, but Chicago could sweeten the pot by tossing in Daniel Gafford, along with future second-round picks.

Justise Winslow, SF, Grizzlies

Memphis made a play for Winslow, but he’s never really developed as an outside shooter, and he’s been hurt a lot to start his career.

If the Grizzlies have any doubts about where he fits in with the team, they could shop him. Chicago could come knocking, especially given the Otto Porter situation.

Winslow is still a bit of a liability on the perimeter, but he can score, create, and defend with the best of them.

Regardless of what happens with Porter’s contract, the Bulls could plan ahead and snag Winslow by offering Memphis a package of Thaddeus Young and perhaps this year’s lottery pick.

Dangling that lottery pick could feel like a steep offering for just Winslow, especially if Porter doesn’t opt out.

Instead, Chicago could try to fix their issue at center. Wendell Carter has gone public about not wanting to man the five, while Lauri Markkanen took a step back in his development this past season.

Does that mean it’s time to blow this roster up a bit and go get a stud center? Perhaps, especially since Cleveland could be looking to deal Andre Drummond, assuming he doesn’t opt out of his current deal.

Should that happen, Drummond for Thaddeus Young, Tomas Satoransky, Wendell Carter Jr., and Chicago’s lottery pick could make sense. The Cavs could sweeten the pot by tossing in a nice prospect like Dylan Windler.

Nikola Vucevic, C, Magic

There is potential for a very similar deal involving Vucevic, who is the better all-around player when compared to Drummond.

Vucevic may be a more attractive long-term option, too, considering he’s under contract for the next three years.

Otto Porter opting in would make this deal easy to put together financially. Their salaries would virtually match, with the Bulls needing only to toss in their top pick and perhaps one of Markkanen or Carter.

If Porter leaves town, a trade including Young, Satoransky, and Markkanen or Carter (as well as picks) would also work.

Trying to predict who the Bulls will trade for next feels like an impossible task. That’s why I have four options here.

They could always dangle Zach LaVine in an effort to really blow things up, they can patch a hole at small forward, or they can chase a stud big man.

If I were running this franchise, I’d go get a big man I can trust, promote Coby White to the starting five, and gauge interest in my other would-be building blocks.

Going forward with a starting five of Coby White, Zach LaVine, Otto Porter (or Denzel Valentine if Porter is traded), Lauri Markkanen, and Nikola Vucevic doesn’t look bad on paper.

Teams specify protections required

The Chicago Cubs, Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, and White Sox have indicated in a letter to the Illinois Gaming Board specific protections they want in place in order for them to offer sports betting services. The aim is to help shape the regulations of sports betting in the state, avoiding issues with competitors.

While the teams are ready to be a part of the recently legalized Illinois sports betting industry, their recommendations for regulations will help justify a spend of $10m on licensing and operating at or near their home venues.

Need for controlling competitors

The concerns expressed by Chicago’s professional sports franchises mainly regard competitors. The teams maintain they want to ensure that casinos and off-track betting facilities are prohibited from offering betting services nearby. Examples provided in the letter include restaurants and outlets within a five-block radius of the teams’ home site.

The state law allows licensed sports teams to operate betting services within a five-block radius of their venues, and the teams have expressed their wish to maintain that barrier. Online betting is another concern. The letter also claims that competitors’ advertising and marketing materials should be banned within the stated radius unless permission is provided by the home team.

Lottery concerns raised

Chicago’s pro teams are also concerned about competition from the Illinois Lottery. Within the new gaming expansion law, the pilot program that was created to operate through 2023 will eventually allow up to 5,000 lottery retailers to offer parlay betting on sports.

In their letter, the teams state that lottery operations will eventually expand to entice sports fans to bet at lottery terminals across the state. They add:

Left unchecked, this could include terminals within five blocks of a sports facility(ies) and result in major source of wagering saturation in the state.”

The letter cites the regulations in Washington, D.C. involving protected radius areas as a model that the Illinois Gaming Board should use for sports betting. It also points out that the $10m licensing fee is far more expensive than the $500,000 cost of a license in D.C.

The representative letter

Fox Rothschild, an attorney’s office in Chicago, addressed the letter to the Illinois Gaming Board on behalf of the five professional sports teams.

The letter arrived before the end of a public comment period set by the state concerning the sports portion of a gambling expansion law enacted in June. Up to seven licenses for sports betting are currently available to professional sports betting facilities. Venues must have the capacity to hold a minimum of 17,000 people to be eligible to apply.
